Why Make Taco Pie?

A typical Taco Night in our house consists of ground beef with taco seasoning (try my homemeade version here), soft or hard shells, fresh grated cheddar cheese, and all sorts of fun toppings so that each person can customize their tacos to their own taste.

Its great because then everyone gets to eat tacos exactly the way they like them!

But, it get s a little repetitive. So I am always trying to think of ways to keep our family “Taco Nights” fresh and fun. Since my Taco Pasta is always a crowd pleaser, I thought I’d create a Taco Pie and see if I could capture the same magic.

What Is Taco Pie?

Taco Pie is similar to traditional tacos in the sense that you still use seasoned ground beef or turkey as the main ingredient.

But, instead of a hard corn shell or a soft flour tortilla as the vessel to hold the meat, I use a can of refrigerated crescent rolls. I pinch and form the dough into a pie pan creating pie crust. The beauty of the crescent rolls is that they are a tad sweet and have a lot of butter in them which creates a soft and pillowy crust once the pie is baked.

Once the crescent roll pie crust is pinched into place, simply scoop the cooked taco meat into the uncooked pie crust. Top with shredded cheese and pop into the oven to bake.

Once baked, cut the pie into slices and serve. Everyone can top their slice of pie with their favorite taco toppings.

What Toppings Can You Serve with Taco Pie:

  • sour cream
  • guacamole
  • salsa or taco sauce
  • hot sauce
  • chopped cilantro
  • sliced olives
  • diced tomatoes
  • sliced avocado
  • diced onions
  • shredded lettuce

Can You Customize the Meat Mixture?

You bet! This is my favorite part of Taco Pie. You can absolutely just use seasoned ground beef or turkey and call it a day.

But you can also have fun trying out different versions of the pie by adding things like:

  • chopped onion
  • diced bell peppers
  • canned diced tomatoes (drained)
  • black beans
  • pinto beans
  • salsa
  • corn
  • zucchini

What Ingredients Do You Need to Make Taco Pie?

  • refrigerated crescent rolls like these (get the original version, not big and flakey as it will make the dough too thick and may not cook evenly)
  • ground beef
  • taco seasoning (find my homemeade version here)
  • frozen corn
  • canned black bean
  • shredded cheddar cheese

How Do You Make Taco Pie With Crescent Rolls?

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

in a large pan. brown 1lb of lean ground beef and drain. Add taco seasoning and 2/3 cup of water. Simmer a few minutes on medium heat.

Stir in 1/2 c of frozen corn and 1/2 c of black beans (drained and rinsed).

In a 9″ pie pan, use your fingers to spread out the crescent rolls along the bottom of the pan. Do not grease the pan. There is plenty of butter in the crescent roll dough so it will not stick.

Separate some of the dough and use it for the sides of the pan. Use your fingers to pinch the rolls together to form an even pie crust along the bottom and up the sides of the pie pan. It doesn’t need to be pretty, just as even as you can get it.

Pour the meat mixture into the pie pan on top of the uncooked pie crust.

Top with 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese.

Bake at 375 degrees for 16-18 minutes or until pie crust is golden.

Cut into slices and serve with your favorite taco toppings like sour cream, salsa, diced avocado, etc.

  1. I followed the directions and the upper crust was beautiful and the cheese melted and brown in spots, however the bottom wasn’t cooked at all gummy and gross. What did I do wrong?

    1. Oh no! Ovens vary, so it might not have fully cooked the crust all of the way through. Maybe try cooking it a few more minutes on a lower rack in the oven so the bottom of your dish is closer to the heat source. Also, try covering the the edges of the crust with a few strips of aluminum foil for the last few mins of cooking if they are starting to look done sooner than the rest of it.
