What is White BBQ Sauce?

Being way up north in Minnesota, we don’t typically see white BBQ sauce on the menu, but its a staple in southern barbecue joints. Its sometimes referred to as Alabama White Sauce, and is a tangy, mayonnaise based cream sauce with a little spice kick form the addition of horseradish.

You can serve this sauce on any traditional BBQ meats like chicken, ribs or pulled pork. With its cool, creamy tangy flavor, it could also be used to make coleslaw or as a dipping sauce for roasted vegetables as well.

In this dish, I like to shredded chicken with a mix of garlic and savory spices with just a hint of sweetness. I prepare it in the slow cooker so it cooks slowly (like typical BBQ meats do), but its preserves all of the moisture so the chicken comes out nice and juicy.

I pile it on a soft bun and then slather it with the tangy white BBQ sauce.

What Ingredients do you need to make Shredded Chicken?

  • boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • chicken stock (I like this one)
  • brown sugar
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • oregano
  • paprika
ingredients for chicken

How Do You Make Shredded Chicken for the Sandwiches?

In a slow cooker, start with 2lbs of chicken breasts, and pour 2 cups of chicken broth over top of them.

Add 1T of brown sugar, 1t garlic powder, 1t onion powder,1 t oregano and 1t paprika.

Give everything a good stir and set it on low for 6-7 hours or high for 3 hours, or until chicken is cooked through (165 degrees F minimum).

Once the chicken is cooked, use two forks to gently shred it.

If you are going to serve it immediately, you can transfer it out of the slow cooker and into a serving dish.

If you are making the chicken a head if time, store it in an airtight container in the liquid from the slow cooker so that it maintains its moisture. You can store it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

In a bowl, combine 1 cup of mayo, 2T apple cider vinegar, 4t brown sugar, 2t dijon mustard and 1t of horseradish. Give it a good stir.

Add 1/2 t lemon juice and 1/2 t of cayenne pepper and stir until fully combined.

Serve in a small bowl with a spoon.

How to Assemble Shredded Chicken Sandwiches with White BBQ Sauce

I prefer to use a soft roll like a hamburger bun. If you prefer a sturdy roll that can absorb the juices form the chicken without getting soggy, try a kiaser roll.

Use tongs to place a heaping about of the shredded chicken onto each bun.

Top with your desired amount of White BBQ Sauce. I just love the flavor of this sauce, so 2-3 spoonfulls make it onto my sandwich!
