Why I love this recipe

Apple season is in full swing and there is nothing better than using fresh, tart apples to make a cozy Fall dessert. I love this recipe because it only takes a few ingredients, but tastes like you have been in the kitchen rolling out dough all day.

  • Fool proof recipe: Store bought crescent rolls make shaping dough around apples a breeze.

How to make Crescent Roll Apple Dumplings

Prep the pan – Preheat oven to 350°F degrees and use cooking spray to grease a 9×13 baking dish.

Prepare the apples – Peel two large apples, then slice into 16 wedges. I love this simple peeler.

Wrap – Open and unroll one can of crescent dough, then separate into triangles. Place two apple wedges at the wide end of each triangle, and roll up snugly. Arrange with the point of the triangle-side up in the baking dish for a pretty effect.

Make the cinnamon sugar sauce – In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/2 cup butter. Whisk in 1 cup sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon and 1 tsp vanilla. Stir occasionally while cooking until sauce becomes thick. Pour the mixture evenly over the dumplings.

Add the soda – Pour 1 mini can of Sprite around the edges and down the center between dumplings (not directly on top of). This will help the tops of the dumplings stay crisp.

Bake – Bake dumplings for 30 mins or until dough is fully cooked and a bit crisp of top.

Serve – Spoon dumpling onto plate. Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Feel free to drizzle some of the cinnamon sugar sauce from the baking dish over top before serving.

FAQ’s

Can I use Mountain Dew instead of Sprite?

Yes. Any lemon-lime soda works. Mountain Dew will give the same caramel effect.

Can I use sweeter apples?

Baked apple dishes work best with trat apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. Otherwise the dish will taste too overly sweet.

Are these apple dumplings nut-free/classroom-friendly?

This recipe is naturally nut-free. If sending to school, skip the ice-cream topping and pack extra sauce for dipping.
