What is Memorial Day weekend?

I just love the red, white and blue summer holidays starting with Memorial Day.

For many, this holiday of remembrance is spent out doors. We place flags and flowers of the graves of our fallen heroes, remembering the ultimate sacrifice that they gave for our country. We also tend to celebrate this unofficial start of summer with a Memorial Day Weekend backyard barbecue of some sort.

Sometimes we grill burgers or hot dogs. Sometimes we smoke a pork shoulder for pulled pork sandwiches. Sometimes we BBQ ribs. Any main dish we serve is always accompanied by fun side dishes and of course, some great desserts.

How to make a patriotic dessert for your Memorial Day celebration

Dessert is the arguably the best part of the meal. When hosting a summer holiday like Memorial Day or 4th of July, I try and infuse some red, white and blue into the sweet treats that I am serving.

I also focus on summery flavors like lemon or fresh berries. Conveniently, red strawberries and fresh blueberries are at their peek of juicy sweetness this time of year. It’s easy to incorporate them into classic fruit pies served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Festive tip: Take that slice of pie or cake to the next level by sticking little American flags onto each slice.

Memorial Day Dessert Recipes: Slices of pound cake with whipped cream, strawberries and blueberries. Topped with American flag picks.

Or try serving summery desserts like a strawberry shortcake, but make it patriotic by using a combination of red berries and blue berries, and serve with whipped cream over an angel food cake. Or use a pound cake, and use the berries to make an American flag cake design on top.

Memorial Day Dessert Recipes: blueberries and raspberries in the shape of an American flag on top of pound cake covered in whip cream.

If you are focusing on healthy eating, try a patriotic fresh fruit salad. Toss raspberries, blue berries, bananas and strawberries in a little lime juice and top with some orange or lemon zest.

Looking for something a bit more unique? Try making one of the 5 fun desserts I’ve listed below. All five are easy recipes that will really take your Memorial Day menu to the next level.

Cherry Cheesecake Cake
Cherry Cheesecake Cake is a fun twist on a classic dessert. Fluffy white cake topped with cheesecake whip and sweet cherry pie filling is lighter than traditional cheesecake, but every bit as delicious.

Ice cream anyone?

Of course you can keep dessert super simple by grabbing some store bought ice cream sandwiches, or the red white and blue striped ice pops, but have you ever made homemade ice cream?

We keep this ice cream maker at our cabin and use it frequently. Most flavors call for just a few simple ingredients and they honestly taste so much better than grocery store ice cream.

We especially love making strawberry ice cream or mint chip. For a patriotic treat, try classic vanilla topped with red, white and blue sprinkles.
