Why Air Fryer Green Beans Are a Game-Changer

For this busy mom, an air fryer isn’t just a kitchen tool, it can literally change the weeknight cooking game. Quick, healthy, and delicious meals that require minimal time or effort is truly a life saver when we get home late from school/work/activates, and I need to get dinner on the table for my tired and hungry family as quickly as I can.

Air fryer recipes are always popular, and for good reason. They’re fast, fuss-free, and require minimal cleanup.

I use my air fryer a lot for main dishes like my Pickle Chicken Sandwiches and my Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan.  But air fryers can also be super slick to use for whipping up side dishes. This way, I can focus my attention and energy on my main dish while my veggies cook themselves. I’m a super big fan of anything that cooks itself.

I used to oven roast my green beans, until I discovered that the air fryer can give me the same tasty side dish, but it cooks them in a fraction of the time.

Seasoned salt gives them just a little hint of a savory, salty kick. I can serve them along side almost anything from steak, to sandwiches, to lasagna.

This recipe is also a great way to get kids involved in the kitchen—let them help wash, trim, or season the green beans.

How to make Air Fryer Green Beans

I always start by using a veggie wash on my green beans, and giving them a good rinse in my colander. Drain.

Transfer washed beans to a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, trim off any funky looking ends.

My preference is to move the beans into a large bowl so I have room to work, but you can also save yourself a dish to wash, and just drop them straight into your air fryer basket. Drizzle 1/2 tsp or a few sprays of olive oil to coat the beans. I highly recommend this glass olive oil sprayer. Sprinkle 1 tsp of seasoning salt and toss beans until evenly coated.

I have a 7 quart air fryer basket, so I can easily fit 2 cups of beans in it. If you are doubling this recipe, or using a smaller air fryer, its a good idea to work in batches.

Air fry at 400 degrees for 6-8 minutes or until beans start to blister and crisp up to your desired level (if you like them to have some softness, cook them less, if you like extra crispy green beans, cook them 1-2 extra minutes). Keep a close eye on them so you do not burn them. Tip: open the basket at the halfway point and give it a good shake to mix the beans around a bit and help prevent scorching.

Tips for Making Perfect Air Fryer Green Beans

The mushy green beans from your childhood are gone for good. For the best results in achieving a nice crispy bean, make sure your green beans are evenly coated with olive oil spray and seasoning salt before popping them into the air fryer. Arrange them in a single layer to ensure even cooking—overcrowding can lead to soggy spots.

Halfway through the 6-8 minute cooking time, pull the basket out and give it a good shake before replacing it and continuing to cook. This will help prevent scorching.

If you’re looking to elevate the flavor even further, try adding a sprinkle of ranch seasoning, a squeeze of juice from a few lemon wedges and a little salt, or a dash of red pepper flakes for a little heat. Try sesame oil, sesame seeds or even chili flakes if you are serving them with an Asian dish.

These green beans are so versatile, and can easily be customized to fit your family’s preferences, or to compliment whatever you are serving them with. They are kind of the perfect side dish.

How Does an Air Fryer Work?

An air fryer is essentially a high-powered convection oven that uses rapid air circulation to cook food quickly. The cooking basket inside an air fryer allows the hot air to flow freely around the food, ensuring even cooking, just like the convection setting on an oven does.

The appliance features a heating element and a fan that circulates hot air around the food at high speeds, creating a crispy, golden exterior without the need for excessive oil.  Since an air fryer uses very little oil or no oil at all, it’s a healthier alternative for achieving fried-food textures and flavors, without the fat, grease and calories of traditional deep frying.

Air Fryer Recommendation

I use the GoWISE USA 7-Quart Electric Air Fryer with Dehydrator.

My favorite thing about this model is the large cooking capacity. I can easily fit 4 chicken breasts or burger patties int the basket. It also came with 3 stackable racks, so I can cook my meat in the basket, and then stack a rack of potatoes and a rack of veggies on top, and cook it all at once. I typically have to adjust the cooking time if I am doing multiple items at once, but it still beats washing three separate baking pans.

There is an easy to use touch screen for adjusting the time and temperature, as well as toggling between different cook mode options. In addition to air fry, this unit can also roast, broil, dehydrate, grill, bake, reheat, or even just keep food warm until you are ready to serve.

My only complaint is that the crisping tray at the bottom of the basket can not be secured in any way. Its a separate, removable piece which is awesome for cleaning, but if you want to simply tilt the basket to shake cooked french fries, etc directly onto a plate, the tray comes loose, and comes flying out onto the plate as well. I work around this by always using serving tongs to transfer food from basket to plate, but it would be nice to be able to just shake some items out as well.

Overall, I think this GoWise USA  is the best air fryer as it’s a great product and is a good value for the price. I have used a Cosori Air Fryer and a Gormia Air Fryer in the past, and I prefer this GoWise USA model.

I have the black one, but also comes in fun red and mint green finishes as well.
